VMware ships Telco Cloud, helps customers manage edge cloud
VMware Inc. is now shipping its Telco Cloud Automation software and announced that communications service providers in several countries have deployed the platform.
In a separate announcement, Texas-based Mavenir Systems Inc., the maker of cloud-native software for communications service firms, said that its engineers had integrated its 5G cloud-native telecommunications functions with Telco Cloud on Dell Technologies Inc.’s edge systems in 5G environments.
Telco Cloud, announced last year by VMware, is orchestration and automation software designed to improve time to revenue for telecommunication companies, automate the service lifecycle and simplify system management.
Telco Cloud has, for example, a decision engine to automate with multi-cloud agility for starting new operations as well as supporting more complex ongoing software release and maintenance operations, according to VMware.
The platform also helps transform architectures from OpenStack to cloud-native applications with integrated onboarding and orchestration. It can achieve unified network orchestration by distributing workloads at the core and edge, and from private to public clouds.
Customer wins include Millicom International Cellular S.A. in Luxembourg; Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., or Singtel; Telecom Italia Group, also referred to as TIM, and its subsidiary TIM Brasil Group; and Telia Co. AB, a Swedish-Finnish telephone company.
For its part, Mavenir says its 5G cloud-native telecom network functions are pre-integrated and tested on VMware and Dell systems, packaging intended to make telecom-company deployments faster and ease the transition to 5G systems.
Mavenir says the network functions will integrate open-source container- and platform-as-a-service with the company’s microservices-based 4G/5G products such as packet core and 4G/5G vRAN functions as well as VMware’s Telco Cloud Automation.
