Sony Semiconductor invests in Raspberry Pi to expand the edge computing ecosystem
Sony Semiconductor Solutions has made a strategic investment in Raspberry Pi Limited, allowing the Raspberry Pi community to access Sony’s AI solution. The partnership plans to provide users with all required AI development tools, which includes Sony’s Aitrios edge computing platform for edge AI sensing. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The two companies are furthering their collaboration by expanding their partnership beyond manufacturing and provisioning image sensors and other semiconductor products. The partnership extension will enable different industries to address challenges related to the increasing need for edge computing solutions for business and digital transformation.

This transaction will allow us to expand our partnership, bringing Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ line of AI products to the Raspberry Pi ecosystem and helping our users to build exciting new machine-learning applications at the edge,” says Eben Upton, the chief executive officer of Raspberry Pi Ltd.
The company says the Sony Aitrios edge computing platform integrates the benefits of the network edge and cloud computing into a single platform. The platform aims to assist its partners in creating sensing solutions with edge devices and addressing challenges encountered in various industries like healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and automotive.
“We are very pleased to be partnering with Raspberry Pi Ltd. to bring our Aitrios platform–which supports the development of unique and diverse solutions utilizing our edge AI devices–to the Raspberry Pi user and developer community and provide a unique development experience,” says Terushi Shimizu, the president and chief executive officer of Sony Semiconductor Solutions.
Developers in the United States can also access Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ Aitrios edge computing platform through a subscription model.

There has been a discussion about the readiness of Raspberry Pi single-board computers and compute modules for industrial-scale applications for several years. In addition to being affordable, the Raspberry Pi ecosystem has improved significantly in the past few years, particularly in terms of software support, and Sony’s investment is another big step forward for the development of the ecosystem. This progress helps developers create more advanced applications with greater flexibility and scalability.
