SolidRun’s NXP-based module adds power for network security, 5G network appliances
SolidRun, an Israel-based electronic embedded device manufacturer, has announced a new family of devices claiming to be the smallest 16-core system-on-module (SoM) platform in the world. The modules are expected to be used in devices ranging from edge network security appliances to 5G networks.
The LX2-Lite system-on-modules and ClearFog LX2-Lite development board are both built around NXP’s Layerscape LX2162A system-on-chip. Designed with a small footprint measuring 25% of the standard COM Express 7 solution, SolidRun is claiming the LX2-Lite Mini SOM to be the smallest 16-core SOM platform in the world.
“Our LX2162A line of processors offers a powerful solution because it takes the robust processing power of our popular LX2160A SoC and shrinks the form factor to better serve the growing market of high-performance software-defined edge network security appliances, the worldwide shift to SD-WAN network architectures, and 5G O-RAN applications while maintaining a size that’s ideal for PCIe add-in cards and mini-ITX appliances,” said Toby Foster, senior product marketing manager at NXP.
LX2-Lite SOM is a high-performance hardware platform that integrates a 16nm FinFET processed NXP LX2162A SoC featuring 16 Cortex-A72 cores clocked at a frequency of 2GHz. The SOM is capable to support up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and comes equipped with embedded power management, memory, storage, and I/O subsystems. The LX2-Lite SOM packs a 50Gbps security acceleration engine and 88Gbps data compression engine for network security and data routing applications.
SolidRun also released the ClearFog LX2-Lite single-board computer as the carrier board for the LX2-Lite SOM. The development platform features a variety of expansion and communications options including, an RJ45 port, 2x SFP28 port (25GbE each), and a USB 3.0 port for I/Os.
“The new ultra-compact LX2-Lite SOMs and ClearFog developer platform will prove to be important additions to our lineup, as they will help developers create advanced edge network appliances of various form factors that are capable of extreme computing and high-speed communications,” said Mordi Blaunstein, VP sales, and marketing at SolidRun.
In terms of software, SolidRun will provide optimized BSP, stable support for select distribution, and continued contributions to mainline projects and community initiatives. The module supports Linux, DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit), UEFI, and NXP Layerscape Secure Boot. Several Linux distros can run on the hardware platform including Debian, Ubuntu, and Yocto-built operating systems.
The ClearFog LX2162A kit is available to buy in two versions: 8GB LPDDR4 RAM for $870 and $1197 for 32GB RAM. However, the manufacturer has not published determined the pricing for the SOM. According to the product page, accessories for the SOM are expected to be released soon.
“We look forward to launching a variety of edge and data center networking solutions that maximize the benefits of this powerful SOM in the months to come,” Blaunstein added.
