OVHcloud acquires gridscale to break into the edge computing market
European cloud computing company OVHcloud has announced its plans to acquire German edge computing firm gridscale.
gridscale specializes in hyperconverged infrastructure, offering a range of multi-tenant IaaS and PaaS products and services. The acquisition marks a milestone for OVHcloud by enabling the company to enter the emerging and fast-growing market of edge computing.
Currently, gridscale’s main presence is in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, where it rapidly deploys public cloud environments on limited infrastructure. The company says this will give OVHcloud’s solutions portfolio a competitive advantage, and enable the cloud computing company to grow in the public cloud market.
“We are impressed by the solutions developed by the gridscale teams, which we will be delighted to integrate into OVHcloud,” says Michel Paulin, CEO of OVHcloud.
“Our solutions and know-how are highly compatible and very complementary. The combination of our different technologies will allow us to accelerate our deployment of Edge Computing solutions and our geographic expansion while optimizing our capital allocation.”
The transaction is expected to close at the beginning of the 2024 fiscal year and will have no impact on the 2023 fiscal year.
Also commenting on the acquisition, Henrik Hasenkamp, founder, and CEO of gridscale, says: “Joining OVHcloud is a great opportunity for gridscale. Their know-how and global footprint will enable us to deploy and enrich our products, at scale, quickly and in accordance with our shared values.
“We look forward, along with the entire team, to getting to work with the OVHcloud teams and our ambitions are reinforced thanks to this trajectory now in common.”
gridscale’s acquisition aims to respond to three key challenges for OVHcloud which include the implementation of new growth strategy in the edge computing market, the expansion of on-premises cloud services, and the increase of the company’s international deployment.
As a result, OVHcloud plans to open several new public cloud regions by 2026, in colocation data centers.
All gridscale’s employees, management team and founders will join the OVHcloud workforce, to hasten the edge computing integration into OVHcloud products. The new offering will be consumable as a result of existing APIs.
