NXP acquires Kinara for $307M to bolster edge AI in industrial and automotive sectors

NXP Semiconductors has announced its acquisition of Kinara, a leader in high-performance, energy-efficient neural processing units (NPUs), for $307 million in an all-cash deal.

The acquisition aims to enhance NXP’s processing portfolio with Kinara’s advanced AI hardware and software, targeting industrial and automotive edge markets.

Kinara’s NPUs, including Ara-1 and Ara-2, deliver high-performance, energy-efficient AI processing for applications like vision, voice, and generative AI.

The deal will enable NXP to create scalable AI platforms by integrating Kinara’s NPUs with its existing processors, connectivity, security, and analog solutions. The acquisition supports the growing demand for edge AI, which offers faster responses, improved data privacy, and reduced costs by processing data locally.

Kinara’s software development tools, including model libraries and optimization tools, will be integrated into NXP’s eIQ AI/ML software environment. The combined technologies will address AI needs across industrial and automotive markets, simplifying complexity and accelerating time-to-market for customers.

NXP and Kinara’s innovations will be showcased at Embedded World 2025 in Nuremberg. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.

NXP emphasizes the transformative potential of generative AI in improving efficiency, safety, and unlocking new use cases in edge systems. NXP recently partnered with Seco, an IoT and AI solution provider to integrate their technologies for a unified hardware and software solution.
