Nokia and Elisa lead Europe’s first 5G Cloud RAN revolution with Red Hat

Nokia and Elisa have launched Europe’s first commercial 5G Cloud RAN deployment using Red Hat OpenShift. The deployment took place in Espoo, Finland, following a successful trial in October 2023.

Nokia’s Cloud RAN solution allows for hybrid environments and supports the transition to full cloud-native networks. The deployment includes Nokia’s AirScale Massive MIMO radios and AI-powered MantaRay network management.

Elisa utilized Dell XR8620 servers and Red Hat OpenShift to enhance cloud-native RAN functions. The Cloud RAN architecture improves scalability and meets changing customer needs by moving computing power closer to the network edge.

“This successful Cloud RAN deployment with Nokia is another important step on our cloudification which started with cloudifying the network core and edge, and now includes the radio access network,” says Kalle Lehtinen, Chief Technology Officer, Elisa. “We continue to pioneer new technologies in our journey towards autonomous operations helping us to continue innovating and delivering the best customer experience.”

The deployment facilitates the transition towards 6G, which is expected to be more cloud-native. Cloudification is key to developing self-driving and self-healing autonomous networks for Elisa.

Nokia’s anyRAN approach offers flexibility and choice for service providers in their RAN evolution.

Both companies have emphasize the importance of cloudification for new revenue models and improved customer experiences.
