Movandi, Rakuten Mobile partner to expand 5G mmWave network coverage in Japan
Movandi, a 5G mmWave manufacturer, has partnered with Rakuten Mobile to improve 5G outdoor and indoor mmWave network coverage and capacity in Japan. Rakuten will use Movandi’s smart repeater and BeamXR Open RAN technology to achieve this goal.
According to Movandi, the current technology used to meet the increasing demand for high-speed, low-latency networks is ineffective. Movandi’s mmWave RF chipsets, phased-array antenna and software technology permit Rakuten Mobile’s 5G mmWave signals to stretch beyond the capacity of similar approaches. At the same time, it could also decrease infrastructure costs by at least half.

Movandi-powered smart repeaters and radios offer high performance at a lower cost for the challenging, higher frequency 5G millimeter waves. According to the company, it provides one of the fastest multi-gigabit cellular speeds and low latency connectivity. 5G millimeter wave technology allows Rakuten Mobile to use spectrum resources in higher bands.
Movandi’s 5G millimeter wave products allow engineers to develop smart active repeater solutions. These solutions can mitigate mmWave technology’s range, line-of-sight, and blockage limitations while providing strong signal transmission. According to Mobile Expert’s Joe Madden, Movandi has cut the deployment costs of repeater-based systems in half while improving their design and fabrication.
