Linux Foundation gets the State of the Edge; Seamster.io launched to publicize edge use cases
LF Edge, an umbrella organization under The Linux Foundation, announced that it has acquired State of the Edge, a vendor-neutral organization that supports the creation of research on edge computing.
According to Matthew Trifiro, CMO of Vapor IO, the State of the Edge was launched in 2018 “align and educate the market on what edge computing truly is, and what is needed to implement it,” said Trifiro. Founding companies included Vapor IO, Packet by Equinix, Edge Gravity by Ericsson, Arm, and Rafay Systems.
The organization has published three major research reports on edge computing that are offered free-of-charge under a Creative Commons license. The latest report a financial forecasting model to predict the expected demand for edge infrastructure
“Edge computing represents a long-term transformation of the Internet, and together this coalition has created a community-supported research model second to none,” said Trifiro.
That research will now be housed under the LF Edge organization. LF Edge itself was formed in 2019 under The Linux Foundation as a group working to establish open, interoperable frameworks for edge computing. LF Edge has put forward seven projects focused on developing a software stack for non-traditional video and connected things that require lower latency and faster processing and mobility.
The organization’s founding co-chairs, Matthew Trifiro, CMO of Vapor IO, and Jacob Smith, VP Bare Metal Strategy & Marketing of Equinix, will remain as co-chairs of State of the Edge. “LF Edge will continue to advance the State of the Edge under the project’s original mission, which has been to accelerate the edge computing industry by developing free, shareable research that can be used by all,” according to a press release.
MobiledgeX miniates Seamster.io with partners to advance edge
Other efforts to promote understanding of edge computing got underway this week. MobiledgeX has partnered with seven other vendors to launched Seamster, an initiative seeking to find and promote enterprise use case and edge technology adoption.
One way they are soliciting help with use cases: sponsoring a contest. Participants can submit ideas for edge services that leverage a mobile phone by April 30, 2020. Winning ideas will get a prize of up to $5000.
Accedian, Dell EMC, MobiledgeX, Stratacache, Topio Networks, VMware, and Worldwide Technology (WWT) are vendor partners in the effort, while Topio Networks is a research partner.
“Seamster is bringing together an eclectic array of players to expedite the information, support and resources needed to help enterprises leverage 5G and edge computing to finally solve problems in their digital transformation efforts,” said MobiledgeX CEO Jason Hoffman. “We invite all companies interested in pursuing this common goal to join Seamster.”
One theme in common with LF Edge’s acquisition of the State of the Edge effort: a focus on getting developers by developing an edge computing ecosystem and providing freely available research on market opportunities and use cases.
“Open source clearly works for code, can it work for gaining market understanding as well?” Hoffman asked in a recent blog post. “Our hope is that an open sharing of insights and observations, starting with our own, will accelerate the identification of the “killer apps” that will catalyze the formation and growth of the edge market as a whole, and that rising tides will float all boats.”
