Federated Wireless teams with AWS, Cal Poly 5G Innovation Network to deploy private wireless
Federated Wireless announced its private wireless deployment with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) to support the school’s 5G innovation network. The new deployment will allow for better research opportunities, improved bandwidth and enhanced connectivity across the San Luis Obispo, California campus. According to the companies, Cal Poly is at the forefront of digital transformation as one of the nation’s top master-level public universities.
“It’s become very clear that private wireless is a major piece of the puzzle for enterprises to realize the massive potential of IoT and cloud automation,” stated Iyad Tarazi, the CEO of Federated Wireless. “Our work with AWS is about giving customers the easiest path to get started with private wireless while creating seamless, supported integrations. We’re proud to streamline this offering for entities that are eager to get started with private wireless and 5G.”
The Cal Poly Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub) is a Cloud Innovation Center powered by AWS that provides solutions to real-world problems. It allows public sector entities to take advantage of tech such as cloud computing, edge computing and IoT.
Cal Poly’s 5G innovation network allows the university to leverage the cloud-based advantages of CBRS 5G connectivity to progress innovative projects and research. Currently, faculty members and students from various departments are working on a construction management project to pilot a digital twin for the campus. Other research includes autonomous farming, smart greenhouses and other data-intensive projects.
Meanwhile, Federated Wireless is a member of the AWS ISV Accelerate Program. This program helps AWS Partner software solutions integrate with or run on AWS.
“Our customers want simple, fast and dedicated wireless connectivity to enable their mission-critical applications,” stated Sameer Vuyyuru, head of worldwide business development, telco industry at AWS. “The combination of AWS with Federated Wireless’s private wireless network for your enterprise helps simplify the process to build, deploy and manage private wireless networks, making it easier for more customers to realize the benefits.”
Multi-tenancy allows private wireless networks to be partitioned for different requirements and user groups. The companies say that private 5G can scale to accommodate projects, beginning with the DxHub and numerous organizations on campus, including IT services facilities and academic research.
The Cal Poly 5G Private Wireless Solution provides secure connectivity in remote, hard-to-reach areas. The solution is built on AWS Snowcone, a compact and durable edge compute, storage and data transfer device. It connects to Federated Wireless shared spectrum available on the AWS cloud platform.
This allows Cal Poly to offer cloud-based applications in locations across its expansive and geographically different campus locations.
Federated Wireless made news early this year for collaborating with IoT distributor, CalChip Connect, to offer private 5G networks for enterprise clients. Enterprises could earn cryptocurrency from their networks with this unique private 5G arrangement.
