Equinix adds option for cloud-like delivery of Dell Technologies storage, HCI kit

Equinix has collaborated with Dell Technologies to provide what it said is a “cloud-like experience” to enterprise customers that are looking to benefit from colocated digital infrastructure with the same kind of control over security, hardware specification, performance, energy use, and they are used to getting from their data centers.

As a part of the agreement, Dell PowerStore hardware will be integrated with Equinix Metal to provide all-flash array storage space for physical, virtual, and containerized workloads. The combination will provide Dell PowerStorage as a fully operational service that will not only include procuring, installing, and maintaining the hardware but also managing the colocation, power, top of the rack, and distribution network across the contract term. The solution gives the flexibility to scale the storage as per the requirements with a minimum deployment commitment of 25TiB and can be scaled to more than 2 petabytes per deployment.

“At Equinix, we sit at the intersection of physical and digital, helping customers put infrastructure from the right partners in the right places at the right time,” said Zac Smith, Managing Director of Equinix Metal in a statement.

“Today, we’re advancing this vision with Dell Technologies by expanding our managed appliance portfolio to include Dell’s most popular storage, hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), and data protection and management solutions — each available as a service in 18+ Equinix global locations,” Smith said.

Equinix expands its hyper-converged infrastructure portfolio with the addition of Dell’s VxRail, which includes compute, storage, networking, and virtualization resources in a single device that includes VMware, VSAN, vSphere, and vCenter software.

To manage workload data close to the cloud, Dell PowerProtect DDVE (Data Domain Virtual Edition) takes care of the enterprise data across any cloud or on-premise environment. The integration of the Dell PowerProtect DDVE with Equinix Metal will provide data security and management power to connect the data to any cloud platform.

Executives said that with the Equinix Metal partnership, customers looking for reduced deployment times and increased global reach can use Dell solutions “as a service” instead of buying and deploying equipment on their own. Having equipment available via Equinix Metal will eliminate the lead time and complexities that come along with building their own infrastructure while gaining turnkey access to Equinix interconnection services, the executives noted.
