Edge Centres expands ‘off-grid’ edge data centers to Japanese market

Off-grid data center company Edge Centres is expanding into Japan in partnership with IT strategy firm Alan Kei Associates. The launch is expected during the fourth quarter of 2021.

With new Edge Data Centres facilities opening in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, Edge Centres serves ISPs, RSPs and MSPs with colocation, dark fibre, IP transit and cloud connect services. The company says it has redesigned the concept of data centers from start to finish to create off-grid, carbon-positive data centers. Edge Centres can be built to suit any terrain and produce more electricity than they use.

The first expansion site in Japan is planned for the Kanto region (ECJ1) and will be used as a showcase for government and commercial clients. A second location is planned for Kyushu (ECJ2).

“This state-of-the-art, off-grid data centre will highlight the capability of the Edge Centres’ data centres and their ability to be deployed in any location,” said Edge Centres CEO Jonathan Eaves.

Through access to Tier-1 networks, providers can connect to the world’s largest edge concentration of Japanese networks in Edge Centre colocation facilities around the country, improving network performance. Dark fibre solutions allow providers to get even closer to RSPs with dedicated solutions using redundant and independent routes.

“The Japanese data centre market is heavily concentrated in Tokyo and Osaka” said Julian Lloyd, Managing Partner and Co-Founder of Alan Kei Associates. “There remain many opportunities in other cities around Japan which will enable growth of high-tech innovation hubs and support the Japanese government’s many Digital Transformation initiatives.”

As Japan moves towards a carbon-neutral economy, Alan Kei Associates will use its extensive local market knowledge to assist EdgeCentres in combining state-of-the-art containerized data centre technology with edge computing capabilities and renewable energy technologies to enable government and enterprise customers to achieve long term sustainability targets.
