Couchbase, Arthrex collaboration promises to enhance patient care with edge-based IoT data
Couchbase, a provider of NoSQL database technology for enterprise applications, has announced that Arthrex, a minimally invasive surgical technology company, has selected its cloud database platform to help increase patient outcomes. The database hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) stores and manages patient data, surgical data and metadata, including images and videos from Arthrex devices. Synergy SurgeonVault uses this information to create post-operative reports for ongoing patient care. The companies say this will help improve patient outcomes.
“Thanks to Couchbase’s edge-ready database platform and AWS, we can support distributed infrastructures to ensure SurgeonVault always performs at unmatched speeds, regardless of sporadic network connectivity, and that it’s always available from any location and device,” stated said Gregory St. Clair, software architect at Arthrex.
Arthrex provides hospital operating rooms with interconnected surgical devices such as pumps, endoscopic cameras and ablation devices. Medical professionals use these devices in bone surgery, ligament surgery and reconstruction. Their Linux-based application runs with embedded Couchbase Lite to store relevant data. According to the company, this technology ensures that the instruments run 100% of the time, even with slow internet connections or no connectivity. Users also employ Couchbase to securely and reliably sync data across the hospital network from edge devices.
The companies say Arthrex’s suite of applications leverages Couchbase to securely synchronize data from medical devices and systems, such as hospital electronic health record systems. Its Synergy SurgeonVault application improves communication between surgeons and patients by providing quick access to post-operative patient care. High availability is ensured through automatic data sharding and replication. At the same time, Couchbase Autonomous Operator covers cluster management, scheduling and storage.
“We introduced an industry-first embedded document database that automatically synchronizes data across the entirety of an organization’s cloud, edge and mobile infrastructure, with or without internet connectivity,” stated Wayne Carter, vice president of engineering at Couchbase. “It’s very exciting to see Arthrex leveraging our technology to harness the power of edge computing to build innovative solutions that use IoT device data to drive decisions and improve patient care.”
According to the companies, Arthrex adheres to compliance laws such as HIPAA and GDPR. Couchbase provides the necessary security measures such as Transport Layer Security for transport, database encryption and access control rules. The companies say that this collaboration ensures that sensitive information is protected across the entire data pipeline.
“Our devices operate in a mostly heterogeneous environment, with a variety of different devices and versions of devices. We want to be able to move data around the entire ecosystem, including between devices and other tiers. Anyone who has tried to do this knows it is very difficult. Couchbase gives us the flexibility of NoSQL and JSON, making it easier for us to passively pass data back and forth,” added St. Clair.
Couchbase announced earlier this year announced the release of their edge-ready data platform, Mobile 3. This platform allowed mobile developers and edge architects to design applications in the cloud or at the edge on mobile and IoT devices.
“Customers increasingly require mobile and edge capabilities to meet modern application demands and data must always be available so the app always performs at unmatched speed,” explained Wayne Carter, vice president of Engineering, at Couchbase.
He added that the company successfully simplified the development and management of complex data synchronization tasks and that its embedded database enables customers to build applications that run from the cloud to the edge, using existing skills and code.
