Ceva unveils PentaG-RAN baseband platform for 5G open RAN

Ceva Incorporation, a wireless connectivity and smart sensing technology developer, has launched PentaG-RAN, an open RAN platform for base stations and radio. The company created PentaG-RAN to reduce entry barriers for organizations with plans to develop business opportunities in the Open RAN equipment market. The 5G baseband platform IP is designed to cover a wide range of cellular infrastructure, including distributed units (DU), and remote radio units (RRU), from small cell to Massive Multiple-Input, Multiple Output (mMIMO).

ABI Research predicts that 5G outdoor mobile infrastructure equipment shipments, including massive MIMO radios, Open RAN radios, small cells, and virtual basebands, will have a compound annual growth rate of 17 percent from 2022 to 2027. Ceva PentaG-RAN provides a comprehensive platform for a physical layer 1 solution with optimized hardware/software integration to capitalize on the market growth.

“CEVA has been at the leading edge of DSP technology in cellular infrastructure for the last decade, collaborating with leading Tier-1 OEMs to deliver the most advanced DSP architectures deployed in 5G RAN today,” said Guy Keshet, VP and GM of the mobile broadband business unit at CEVA. “Our PentaG-RAN platform was formed out of this extensive experience and brings the next level platform solution to help drive the next generation of 5G chipsets for massive MIMO systems and new O-RAN use cases.”

The PentaG-RAN platform also incorporates digital signal processors, physical layer control DSPs and a 5G hardware accelerator for heavy workloads. It offers 10x better power savings and area reduction than commercially available FPGA and CPU-based devices.

For customization, the company also provides expedited ASIC design with its co-creation services for PentaG-RAN customers. The users can develop an entire physical layer subsystem to design a complete system-on-chip.

The PentaG-RAN platform integrates the company’s new virtual platform simulator, a unified System-C modeling environment. This platform enables enterprise customers to model and design a pre-silicon solution with a proof-of-concept for all platform components. This will assist them in speeding up the time to market for those who use the PentaG-RAN platform.

Recently, Ceva announced a new product for consumer robotics, XR glasses, and 3D audio headsets. This addition will give these devices more precise heading, motion tracking and orientation detection.
