Capgemini and Viavi enter new 5G and edge-focused collaboration
Information technology services company Capgemini and fiber testing expert Viavi have recently announced a new collaboration. The partnership will see Capgemini Engineering in Portugal develop an industry-leading 5G and O-RAN lab test capability based on Viavi’s O-RAN Lab as a Service (LaaS) solutions.
According to Viavi, in order to build a successful 5G open network, both end-to-end performance and core testing are required.
However, this is complicated by fact that open networks can require a variety of different radio types and manufacturers. Getting these networks to perform better than traditional networks while also delivering new functionalities and reduced infrastructure costs is a challenge.
The new collaboration between Capgemini and Viavi aims to tackle this challenge and address the growing demands for 5G and O-RAN validation.

“Our leading position in testing new open RAN architectures has been achieved thanks to our history and expertise working with manufacturers and operators and in defining benchmarks for how high-performance networks must operate,” explained Ian Langley, Vice President and General Manager of Viavi’s Wireless Business Unit.
“We’re delighted to work alongside Capgemini to validate end-to-end network performance, providing test solutions from RAN to Core.”
The upcoming O-RAN lab test capability built by Capgemini will integrate Viavi’s extensive portfolio of test tools.
This will enable engineers to access comprehensive measurements for the entire network lifecycle, as well as system integration and performance testing of gNBs, core networks, core network components, and O-RAN subsystems.
“With an ecosystem of both technology and telecom partners and focus on end-to-end solutions for industries, Capgemini is committed to supporting our clients to take advantage of the 5G and Edge revolution, driving their data-driven transformation towards Intelligent Industry,” said Shamik Mishra, the company’s CTO of Connectivity.
“We chose to team up with VIAVI to ensure we continue to deliver the best service to our clients, augmenting our 5G Lab As A Service capability in Portugal to reduce time to market and mitigate technical and business risks significantly,” Mishra concluded.
Both companies have been particularly active in the edge field during the last year.
In April 2020, Capgemini joined an initiative to promote federated multi-access edge computing, and in June this year, Viavi announced the availability of its TeraVM O-CU Tester on AWS Outposts.
