Canadian Space Agency awards Galaxia $1.7 million for edge space tech platform
A Canada-based space computation company, Galaxia Mission Systems, has been awarded a $1.7 million contribution from the Canadian Space Agency to construct and launch its proprietary edge computing platform for space, Mobius SDS. This funding will enable the building of Galaxia’s first two nano-satellite prototypes, which will take two years to build and one year to test.
“This contribution is the catalyst we needed to invest in materials, staff and research to bring our Mobius Software Defined Satellite Platform to life,” notes Arad Gharagozli, the founder and CEO of Galaxia.
The Mobius Constellation will consist of dozens of these versatile, programmable satellites designed to transform the energy, infrastructure monitoring and maritime security sectors. This technology will allow companies to monitor power lines and identify oil spills or illegal fishing, for example.
Company executives say the mission of Galaxia is to make space access more efficient, affordable and accessible. By utilizing its pay-per-use business model and customizable platform, thousands of small to medium-sized businesses across the globe can now create applications at an affordable rate. Moreover, with Galaxia’s AI-optimized On-Board Computer, APEX, real-time image capture and processing on board the satellite is now possible, the company continues.
Gharagozli adds, “With this investment, we are aiming to make historic advancements for the global space industry while bringing high-tech industries, jobs and opportunity to Atlantic Canada.”
In 2022, Metaspectral, a software company providing computer vision solutions, received funding within the smartEarth Canadian Space Agency initiative to develop a system for measuring CO2 levels from ground level using hyperspectral data. The company’s hybrid on-premise and cloud-based platform can identify materials and their characteristics that would otherwise be unseen.
