Barbara IoT unveils edge-based analysis tool for unexpected shutdown in grid operations
Barbara IoT, a Spanish edge security and smart grid startup, has developed a tool based on edge computing technology that aims to analyze and characterize the state of electrical substation elements amid an unexpected shutdown or disruption in electrical substations.
To carry out this project, Barbara IoT is working alongside Red Eléctrica, a Spanish Transmission System Operator (TSO), and Elewit, a technology platform provider.
According to Barbara IoT, the tool will provide real-time data analysis of the substation events, which means whenever there is an unexpected shutdown, the software will analyze the data and provide insights into why it happened. The real-time insights into substation events aims to improve connectivity within the electrical grid and provide information that can be used for maintenance and planning of the electrical grid.
With Elewit, the current approach necessitates technicians to study various variables and analyze events in a non-real-time manner. The co-developed trip analysis tool will mitigate this slow and unaffected technique by providing a more comprehensive analysis tool, the company says.
The ecosystem for this trip analysis tool will include small IoT devices for data collection, which can be attached to the corresponding protection element within a substation. This device is capable of collecting data at a high sampling frequency of 0.25 milliseconds, which is claimed to be 80 times faster than the frequency at which the electrical network oscillates. Technicians can access and monitor the behavior of the voltage and intensity of the connected element from the deployed IoT device through a web application interface.
The analysis tool will enable companies to implement proactive maintenance strategies rather than waiting for the components to fail. They can schedule maintenance based on the insights gained from the trip event analysis, preventing unexpected failures, reduced downtime, and extended lifespan of the substation equipment.
Elewit says that the project has successfully passed laboratory tests. The solution will now be evaluated for real-world use cases within the systems of Red Eléctrica.
