Ambarella hitches up with partners for autonomous vehicle development at CES 2023

Ambarella has partnered with Applied Intuition to devise an autonomous vehicle development solution. This technology combines Ambarella’s edge AI and human vision technology with Applied Intuition’s advanced simulation software. The solution leverages Ambarella’s CV3-AD PCIe hardware-in-the-loop card, ensuring smooth integration and improved performance. Both companies will showcase the solution at CES 2023.

“This partnership provides a robust and cost-effective HIL solution,” said Les Kohn, the CTO of Ambarella. “Applied Intuition’s broad set of software solutions and Ambarella’s CV3-AD HIL card enables customers to verify their full ADAS or AV software stack in a real-time, bit-accurate virtual environment.

ECU testing is often costly and lengthy, requiring special HIL rigs and a dedicated laboratory. These delays impede software testing, resulting in a more time-consuming development process.

With the newly developed solution from Ambarella and Applied Intuition, enterprise customers can now avoid waiting for an available ECU. Customers can perform HIL testing without an ECU by integrating the Ambarella CV3-AD PCIe card into their development desktop or server infrastructure. The companies say this technique offers a cost-effective and scalable way to test autonomous vehicles quickly and with minimal effort.

“Through our partnership with Ambarella, we’re excited to make HIL testing more efficient for our customers,” said Peter Ludwig, the CTO of Applied Intuition. “As semiconductor shortages delay access to traditional ECUs for HIL testing, now is a better time than ever to let our customers test their ADAS or AV stack directly on Ambarella’s CV3-AD HIL card.”

Ambarella expands its partner ecosystem for next generational autonomous driving system

Ambarella has partnered with Continental, a company that provides sustainable and connected mobility solutions, and Kodiak Robotics, a self-driving trucking company, to expand its ecosystem of partners. As part of its strategic partnership with Continental, the two companies will work together to create a scalable AI-based hardware and software solution for an automated driving system. Meanwhile, Ambarella will integrate its CV2AQ AI perception system-on-chip into Kodiak Robotics’ self-driving trucks for processing camera data.

Ambarella and Continental have come together to bolster their existing collaboration, harnessing Ambarella’s energy-efficient system-on-chip (SoC) family capabilities with Continental’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The companies are now working on full-stack systems for Level 2+ up to highly automated vehicles that use a multi-sensor approach. This solution will include Continental’s high-resolution cameras, LiDARs, radars and associated software.

“This strategic partnership with Ambarella is further expanding our broad portfolio and taking us a step closer towards Vision Zero and autonomous mobility,” said Frank Petznick, head of the Autonomous Mobility Business Area at Continental.

At CES 2023, Kodiak Robotics will showcase one of its self-driving trucks equipped with Ambarella’s CV2AQ AI perception system-on-chip. According to Kodiak Robotics, Ambarella’s solution optimizes the truck’s camera data processing capabilities. Moreover, Kodiak indicates that CV2AQ incorporates Ambarella’s CVflow AI engine, which delivers outstanding energy-efficient AI performance alongside superior imaging abilities.

“We are excited to be working with Kodiak to showcase our cutting-edge CV2AQ SoC family in their autonomous long-haul trucks,” said Fermi Wang, president and CEO, Ambarella.

Ambarella unveils CV3-AD685, an automotive AI domain controller at CES 2023

Ambarella has added the CV3-AD685 to its CV3 family of automotive AI domain controllers to implement assisted and autonomous driving for L2+ to L4 vehicles. The new system-on-chip, made with Samsung’s 5nm automotive process technology, combines multi-sensor perception, fusion and path planning. It uses an “algorithm first” architecture that supports the entire autonomous driving software stack.

According to Ambarella, the embedded CVflow AI engine enables the CV3-AD685 system-on-chip to deliver 20x faster neural network processing than the previous generation of CV2. CVflow’s general vector processor also provides computer vision processing while including optimization for HD radar.

“Following the recent endorsements from major tier-1 suppliers, our CV3-AD domain controller family is transforming the automotive AD and ADAS market through its unique combination of highly efficient AI processing, advanced image processing and ultra-low power consumption,” said Fermi Wang, the CEO of Ambarella.
